Nothing beats hands-on experience when young people are exploring possible careers and they have little idea what a profession really involves.
For the last three years, numerous students from Kelston Girls’ College trades academy, Te Arataki ke te uru, have studied cookery at Auckland Hotel and Chefs Training School (AHCTS) in Newmarket. Each week, the Kelston girls take the plunge into real tertiary training to determine the best pathway for them when they finish school.
In 2016, students from Green Bay High School St Dominic's Catholic College joined the AHCTS cookery programme. Kelston Girls’ College assistant principal and director of careers academy, Kylie Taffard says at the chefs’ school the students experience a tertiary environment and also, success in that environment.
